Stefan and Mayonnaise

The Stefan and Mayonnaise series by Łódź Kaliska constitutes one of the group’s most consistent and, at the same time, subversive artistic statements on the relationship between high culture, mass imagination, and local identity. Here, the artists enter into a direct dialogue with the tradition of pop art, though they do not treat it as an aesthetic imitation, but rather as a critical tool — analogous to the one Andy Warhol used to describe American reality.

In this context, Kielecki mayonnaise performs a function comparable to Campbell’s soup: it is an everyday, banal product, yet at the same time a carrier of emotions, habits, and regional mythologies.
