Witch hunts, which intensified in the 16th and 17th centuries, were not only an expression of fear of magic and the unknown, but also a reflection of deep social, religious and political tensions.

Women in particular were accused - independent, elderly, widows, herbalists, keepers of knowledge, who went beyond the norms of the time. It was a brutal tool of control that for centuries entrenched oppression against women, suppressing their power and potential.
